Timperley Athletic (Manchester) 1 KEMNAY FC 6
KFC 97’s world tour began with a game against Timperley Athletic JFC, in Manchester. The boys were fresh from a training session at the Manchester City Academy the day before and were also on a high from watching the Man City – Aston Villa game.
Timperley Athletic started brightly but it was James who had the first shot which the keeper saved on its way to the top left-hand corner. The first goal for Kemnay came after about 5 minutes and after some good passing, it was Adam who scored low to the keeper’s left. A few minutes later and the Timperley keeper, Dylan, gifted the ball to Chris but he pulled it over the top. It was disaster for the home side when James Mitchell hit a speculative long range shot that was initially saved but then bobbled between the keeper’s legs and trickled into the net.
With 15 minutes gone, Adam had a chance but he produced one of his trademark “AB Scoops” to lift the ball over the bar. A couple of minutes later and Iain ran-on to a good through ball from Adam and his high shot was touched by the keeper but not enough to keep it out of the net.
Timperley’s No. 6 was particularly outstanding and it was no great surprise when he was the one that gained possession in front of the Kemnay goal and unleashed a deflected shot past James to make the score 3-1 for the away team. Timperley finished the half strongly but James Duncan mopped-up any danger that came his way.
Half Time: Timperley Athletic 1 Kemnay FC 97 3
With 18 players in the squad, all wanting a game, the Kemnay team had 7 new faces at the start of the second half. It took only 1 minute for Fraser to follow a good run with a shot that struck the bar and two minutes later, Charlie also hit the bar but this time the ball fell kindly to Leon to score low to the keeper’s left. A good string of passes between Dean, Charlie and Alex saw the latter score with a shot that the keeper just couldn’t hold.
The sixth goal was miles offside but even with the sporting Anne trying to shout this to the young referee, he failed to take any notice and it was Charlie who scored.
The most entertaining moment of the game came after 15 minutes when the unfortunate Leon hit the bar from directly underneath it, hit the post with the rebound then Alex somehow managed to get in on the act by hoisting the ball over the bar when the goal was gaping. One of these moments you wish you could have recorded for “Soccer A.M.”!
The result of this game wasn’t important - it was the friendship and hospitality offered by the Timperley team, supporters and coaches that we will all remember.
Many thanks to Mark and Julie and all at Timperley Athletic, we hope to see them up in Kemnay sometime, in the not too distant future.
