Stonehaven YFC 9 Kemnay FC 97 4
Kemnay FC 97 hoped to defend their unbeaten league record at Stonehaven but it just wasn’t meant to be in a game full of incident and against a very good team. If only the game had comprised the opening 10 minutes and the closing 10 minutes, Kemnay would have won 4-3 but unfortunately it didn’t!
The game opened with a lot of mistakes and almost all the play in the Kemnay half. It wasn’t much of a surprise when after 3 minutes, a bit of Stonehaven “heady-football” was converted courtesy of a looping header high over the helpless Alex.
Stonehaven continued to dominate but with 15 minutes gone, Iain had a swing at a ball in the Stonehaven box but he failed to connect. Kemnay’s first goal was a cracker and it came straight from the training ground. Iain peeled away from the Stonehaven defence to receive a short corner, passed the ball back to Jack who fired a high cross come shot into the far corner of the net (1-1).
A few minutes later and Alex in the Kemnay goal may have got a touch to push a dangerous corner over the bar. Stonehaven soon regained the lead after good ball through the Kemnay defence was latched-onto by one of their strikers and he calmly slotted the ball into the net.
If Kemnay’s first goal was good, their second was probably better. Some neat passing between Adam, Dean and Iain saw the ball land at Iain’s feet and he cleverly lifted it over the advancing keeper to make it 2-2.
The game was now evenly balanced but the whole complexion changed in a 5 minute spell in which Stonehaven scored 3 times at the end of the half. Alex tried to clear a ball as a Stonehaven striker broke through but the ball took a ricochet and landed in the Kemnay net. Two minutes later and the KFC 97 defence failed to tackle Stonehaven’s skilful No. 10 who blasted the ball high into the net. The third goal in this disastrous period came after some good passing on the right wing and again, Alex was given no chance.
Half Time: Stonehaven YFC 5 KFC 97 2
Kemnay started the 2nd half strongly and a long-range effort from Fraser whizzed past the post. Unfortunately, Stonehaven looked like they could score at will and they did so again with only 5 minutes gone.
Adam and Fraser came close before Stonehaven added their 7th. The ball was bouncing around the right hand corner of the box before it was hoisted across goal and was eventually bundled over the line at the left hand post. Twenty minutes in and it was 8-2 with a low shot to the left corner after a well constructed move.
With 10 minutes left, it seemed like Adam had to score but the ball was stuck at his feet and he just couldn’t get the shot in. Fortunately, the ball broke to Iain and he rifled it in to score Kemnay’s third.
Stonehaven almost got their 9th but Alex did well to save with his feet. They almost scored again when their tricky No. 10 made space out of nothing and was denied only by the post.
Kemnay made the score a bit more respectable when Adam bundled the ball in (not sure what part of his body he used) from a corner – lucky for him as his dad had told him (jokingly of course) that he was walking home if he didn’t score!
Stonehaven scored their 9th in the last minute from a corner that Kemnay just couldn’t clear.
Overall, Stonehaven were the better team but with a bit more luck and some tighter defending, the score wouldn’t have been quite so flattering in their favour.
One final note and something you won’t hear too often but the referee (Mr Walker) was fantastic, praising the boys on both sides for good moves, explaining his decisions and generally offering encouragement throughout.
