Kemnay FC 97 3 Peterhead BC 2 (A.E.T - Full Time: 1-1)
For the second week running, Kemnay FC 97 had to come from behind to record a well-deserved victory, on this occasion after extra time. They were taking on the current B-League leaders (3 wins after 3 games) in the cup and a team that had been in the A-League the previous year so it was always going to be a tough game. If the result was decided on the number of offside traps played then Peterhead BC would have won hands-down but fortunately, Kemnay were able to beat it on a few occasions.
For once, Kemnay were quickest out of the blocks with Alex coming close early on. The game then went through an evenly-balanced period with Peterhead playing the offside trap very well and Kemnay’s strikers often failing to stay or get back onside.
It was 15 minutes before Peterhead won their first corner and as with previous games, Kemnay failed to deal with it. The high out-swinging ball was headed-on by one player to another and he was able to head the ball powerfully into the net from the 6-yard line (0 – 1).
Kemnay tried to beat the offside trap by hoisting the ball over the defensive line, hoping that Iain or Alex could run onto it but the ball was skidding off the wet surface with no wind to hold it up and all too often it went straight to the opponent’s keeper.
Peterhead almost doubled their lead when they picked-up a loose ball but Callum in the Kemnay goal did well to hold onto the resulting high shot.
Ten minutes before the break, Iain beat the offside trap and after shrugging-off two challenges it looked like he might shoot on goal – unfortunately, he chose to square the ball and the chance was lost. Next it was Jack who released Alex down the right wing. He did well to shrug-off two challenges but there was nobody in the middle to meet his cross. Kemnay were now the dominant team but just couldn’t convert the chances.
It looked like the referee was in a hurry to get out of the rain when he blew the half time whistle 5 minutes early.

Peterhead BC almost scored soon after the break when a defence-splitting pass set-up one of their strikers but Callum did well to push the shot away from goal.
Kemnay were continually being caught offside and when they did beat the trap, shots were being pulled off-target or the keeper was dealing with the danger (his kicking was very good).
The break-through finally came after 10 minutes when Iain beat the offside trap, slid the ball past the advancing keeper and was just quick enough to catch it before it ran out of play, squeezing it in from a narrow angle (1 – 1).
Peterhead now came back into the game but the Kemnay rear guard (Connor x 2, Ryan x 2, Fraser, Kyle and Charlie) prevented any clear-cut chances from materialising.
With 15 minutes to go, Peterhead had a hand ball claim for a penalty but luckily for Kemnay, the referee waved “play-on”. Iain beat the offside trap one more time but shot straight at the keeper then a good surging run by Adam saw the ball being passed to Chris but he was just offside.
The last 5 minutes were frantic with both teams trying to win the game in normal time but Peterhead pressing the hardest. Iain was forced wide and just couldn’t get his shot on target. Peterhead looked odds-on to score until Charlie stuck out a foot and diverted a goal-bound shot just past the post. Peterhead couldn’t convert the corner but they then won a second corner that should have been a bye kick. Fortunately, Kemnay were able to clear the danger and Calum also managed to save a long-range shot that bounced wickedly in front of him.

Minutes into extra-time and Peterhead went ahead. Callum was unable to hold a shot and a Peterhead striker lunged-in to convert the rebound, injuring the keeper in the process (1 – 2). The away team pushed for a 3rd but Kemnay kept them out and got their reward when Iain equalised. He beat about 5 players before squeezing the ball home from a narrow angle (2 -2).
Callum Moore was through on the keeper but a good save kept Peterhead in the game. It was joy for the home fans when Fraser powered-down the left wing, crossed the ball into the box and Iain was in the right place at the right time to stick out a foot and lift the ball over the keeper (3 -2).
Extra Time, First Period: KFC 97 3 Peterhead BC 2
Kemnay saw the game out fairly comfortably and actually looked the more likely to score with Jack being bundled into the net before he could connect with a cross and Jack and Connor Hunter combining well but the end product being a weak shot.
This was a very good game of football, played in a competitive but fair manner by both teams. The Peterhead BC coaches must be commended for their sporting behaviour in terms of not questioning every decision of the referee (unlike our previous opponents) and we look forward to what should be two very competitive league games against them.
