Kemnay welcomed Sheddocksley BC to Bogbeth Park on a glorious morning for football. After weeks of poor weather it was fantastic to be playing under blue skies once again - Summer football anyone?
This game kicked off earlier than planned due to the number of players heading into the footballing fiesta at Pittodrie, beamed live to the whole nation on ESPN. To be honest the Dons players could do a lot worse than to take a leaf out of the kids book when it comes to commitment, passion and a grasp of basic footballing skills - all evident at Bogbeth, sadly lacking at Pittodrie!!
The opening exchanges were very even with both teams showing their attacking intent from the off whilst at the same time keeping the defences tight. Kemnay maybe just shaded the opening five minutes, playing some good link up play and creating a number of half chances. However they just didn't seem to get the break of the ball in fromt of goal. When they did manage to create anything they found the visiting keeper in good form.
The first goal did eventually arrive and the home team scored it. Good attacking play on the right by Matthew Law and Sebastian saw a corner awarded. Matthew swung in a delightful ball from the right and Sebastian bulleted a header back across goal and into the corner of the net - a great finish.
The visitors hit back in the best possible fashion and scored the equaliser almost immediately after Kemnay failed to deal with a bouncing ball in the box, their striker giving Archie no chance with a tidy finish. This seemed to give Sheddocksley confidence and they moved into the lead just before half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern - both teams playing some nice football and the visitors taking the chances that came their way. Indeed they took two more after half time to move into a 4-1 lead. That's not to say that Kemnay didn't have their chances. On numerous occasions they played some lovely football in the build up, only to see the final ball go a begging or for shots to find the side net.
To their credit, the home team kept plugging away and did pull back one goal. After good build up play by Cameron and Lewis, the ball broke to Matthew Robertson on the edge of the box. He took an excellent first touch before rifling a low left-footed shot out of the keeper's reach to cut the deficit. Indeed they almost scored a third just after that. After Sheddocksley cleared the ball Reuben met the ball on the run and swung in a beautiful inviting cross from the right. Matthew Law leaped and bulleted a header downwards but the visiting goalkeeper pulled off an excellent save.
This was something of a three part game - having started so brightly and got into the lead, Kemnay allowed Sheddocksley to take the initiative in the middle part of the game, during which time they scored their goals. Then when it looked as though the visitors might run off witht he game, Kemnay put in a spirited finish.
Having been used to playing 7-a-side all season, we agreed to play 8's at the request of the visiting coach and this perhaps didn't help the home side as they'd got used to playing 7's over a period of time. That said Sheddocksley played some nice stuff at times and had a physical presence that Kemnay didn't always match up to. The game was close for long spells though and had the result gone the opposite way, there would have been no complaints.
