Kemnay welcomed ALC Lewis Colts to Bogbeth Park on a glorious morning for football. For the second week in succession the squad was depleted by illness. Matthew Robertson was missing for the second week following a nasty bout of tonsilitis and Mason succumbed to a sickness bug the day before the game - coincidentally the same day that his dad got the barbeque out for the first time in the year. Now I'm told that it had nothing to do with undercooked burgers...that's Spikes story and he's sticking to it!!
Reuben was away for the weekend, leaving a squad of only 7 players, nevertheless enough to play the game.
ALC Lewis started quickly and their neat one touch football proved a challenge for Kemnay but Cameron and Liam, playing in an unaccustomed right back position managed to cope with some quick initial forays into the Kemnay penalty box. Kemnay then started to play some neat football too with good interplay between the midfielders opening up attacking opportunities. One attack led to a fine save from the ALC Lewis goalkeeper, and from the resulting corner from Sebastian saw Liam leap highest to bullet home a header to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
This seemed to give Kemnay some added confidence and they continued to play some good football. It was particularly encouraging to see Archie build the play from the back through Liam and Cameron and through the midfield. Kemnay's second goal came from one such move. Good play in midfield saw Sebastian free Matthew on the right. He showed fantastic pace and then good presence of mind to pick out Sebastian again on the edge of the box and his volley on the turn flew over the ALC Lewis goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Not to be outdone ALC came back into the game and after more good build up play, their striker shrugged off some half-hearted tackles to leave Archie helpless to make the score 2-1. Kemnay responded in the best possible fashion by forcing a corner on the left. The delivery caused all sorts of trouble and after Liam and Matthew had efforts blocked, Ethan pounced to fire home from close range to make it 3-1. ALC Lewis pulled another goal back just before the end of the first 20 when a good shot wrong-footed Archie.
Kemnay started the second 20 in great style and it was Sebastian who restored the home side's 2 goal lead. He showed lovely close control and quick feet to leave two ALC Lewis defenders for dead before firing a lovely left-footed shot beyond the keeper. Kemnay then took more of a grip of the game and created a number of good chances. Ethan had a great run and shot wide, Matthew found good space on the right then over hit his pass to Ethan and Liam shot over after being well set up by Matthew. Ethan shot wide again after being put through by Sebastian.
ALC Lewis were continuing to play attractive football and came close themselves soon after. Their striker set himself and unleashed a powerful dipping shot which appeared to be heading for the net, however Archie threw himself full-length to his left to palm the ball past the post - a great save! He was being superbly supported at the back by the skilful Liam and by Cameron who appears to be growing at the same rate as his big brother...what are you feeding the Cheyne boys on Anne?? Certainly his commitment and timing in the tackle today was excellent, and he also showed some terrific distribution and a willingness to get forward to supplement the attack.
The third period started in a similar fashion. Cameron set up Lewis after a corner was cleared but he shot just over. Liam then headed wide from a corner from Sebastian. Kemnay did get their 5th goal though and it was Sebastian who completed a well deserved hat trick. He picked up the ball in a wide area, beat his man well and struck a low left footed shot beyond the ALC keeper. More chances followed. Lewis and Sebastian exchanged passes before Lewis shot just wide. He was then set up again after a deft flick by Ethan, but again his shot cleared the bar. Matthew then showed some good close control but saw his shot saved before ALC were unlucky to see a shot deflected wide. The game was flowing from end to end again. Lewis saw another shot saved and then Archie denied ALC with a great save with his feet when the striker was through 1 v 1. Matthew then did well to set up Ethan and his fierce shot was really bravely saved by the ALC stopper with his face. He needed some attention, but fortunately was able to continue.
Kemnay scored the final goal of the game with a few minutes left. Liam set up Sebastian in a wide area. He passed the ball on to Lewis and he in turn set up Matthew. He took a touch to get the ball out of his feet and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the net to make the final score 6-2.
After a terrific game last week against Culter Boys, this was another well-contested game between two teams intent on playing a passing game. Credit goes to both teams for playing the game in a good spirit and or Kemnay who managed the whole game with only 7 players.
Kemnay FC Player of the Match - Again there were a few candidates today. Sebastian got three goals, Lewis could have had a few goals too, Liam played really well in an unaccustomed position in the right of defence and did really well. But today, the player of the match goes to Cameron Cheyne. He was never second best in a 50/50 tackle, his cover atthe back when under pressure was impressive, his heading was great and his distribution was good and he was always looking to build from the back. All in all a very disciplined and strong defensive performance.
