Kemnay FC 97 were keen to secure third place in the league after an excellent season and what a way to do it! Motherwell eat your heart out – Kemnay came back from 4 – 0 down with 14 minutes to play to win 5 – 4. I mentioned to James Walker at half-time that it would hopefully be the proverbial “game of two-halves” as the first half had been so poor for Kemnay but nobody quite expected it to turn out the way it did (actually, it was more of a game of three-quarters and a quarter).
The game started brightly for Kemnay with two early corners being sent into the box by James Mitchell and Connor Hunter managed to get his head to one of them but failed to find the target.
After 5 minutes, a seemingly aimless corner from Kintore found its way to their danger-man Danny (destined for much greater things) and he gratefully accepted the gift, scoring from close range. Kintore now began a period of sustained pressure, passing the ball extremely well and causing panic in the home defence. Kemnay on the other hand, struggled to get the ball out of their own box and when they did so, any attempted passes were going astray. Jack interrupted this passage of poor play with a couple of good passes to forward positions but the Kintore defence mopped these up.
James Duncan pulled-off a good point-blank save but it was no great surprise when Kintore doubled their lead 5 minutes before half-time when a long shot was parried and Kintore’s No.7 was on hand to lift the ball over the despairing keeper and into the net. Half-time couldn’t come quick enough for Kemnay!

Half Time:     Kemnay FC 97     0        Kintore United      2

Kemnay were struggling to cope when Kintore’s No. 5 (Danny) was on the ball and James had to save bravely as he ran through on goal. Kintore then hit the bar before scoring their third after some good work on the right saw the ball being zipped across the goal area to an unmarked player at the left-hand post and he was left with an easy finish. Kintore were passing the ball extremely well and seemed to have men in space all over the park.
It was 10 minutes into the second half before Iain had Kemnay’s first shot on goal but the keeper was able to push it round his right hand post. Five minutes later and the game appeared to be finished when Kintore scored to make it 4 – 0 with James initially saving a fierce shot but an opposing forward being quick to pounce on the rebound.
Most teams would have folded at this stage but Kemnay showed what they were made of with a spirited fight back. More players were committed forward and Kintore started to bring on some younger substitutes, thinking the game was won.
Adam was first to “scoop” a shot on goal but it went just over. With 15 minutes left, a series of high balls eventually landed a Sean Reid’s feet but his shot went narrowly past. With the game finally being played in the Kintore half, a good run by Iain on the left saw his cross palmed-out by the keeper into the path of Adam who blasted it low into the net. Three minutes later (and ten minutes before the end) and this time it was Alex who scored with Fraser being the provider after another strong run on the left wing.
With the score now standing at 4 – 2 to Kintore, Kemnay started to believe in themselves but I don’t think anyone thought they could win the game with so little time remaining (apart from the Kintore coach who shouted to his team that “they might lose this game if they don’t tighten-up”).
With 8 minutes to go, Adam received a throw-in on the right wing, hoisted a high ball into the middle and Sean was there to score Kemnay’s third – game-on! One minute later and the dream comeback became reality after Fraser made another great run down the left before squaring the ball to Sean who took a touch, steadied himself and calmly slotted it home.
Kintore now realised they were in trouble and brought back on the players they had rested earlier but it was too late. They simply couldn’t stop Adam’s run down the left wing and he was able to hit the bye line and pass the ball back to Iain to score the 5th and winning goal.
For the first three-quarters of this game, Kintore dominated but Kemnay’s superior fitness and desire to win coupled with changes in the Kintore team set-up led to an unlikely result.
Well done boys, it looks like 3rd place is assured.
