Culter Boys Colts      5           KEMNAY FC 97       2

This was a game that Kemnay had to win if they wanted to achieve their goal of promotion but they came up just short after a spirited performance. Fraser managed to play for the first 20 minutes but his bad cough meant he had to be taken off and his surging runs were sorely missed for the remainder of the game.
The corresponding fixture at Kemnay had resulted in a 4-0 victory for the home team but Culter hit the post twice that day and had since gone on a run of form that had seen them beat Fraserburgh and edge themselves into 2nd place.
Kemnay started nervously and after gifting a corner in the first few seconds, they had to endure 5 minutes of continuous pressure although no real goal threats resulted. Kemnay’s first real chance came after a run by Iain which saw him flash a ball across the goal but there were no takers. The game was very tense with both teams realising its importance but being unable to make any clear-cut chances.
Kemnay made the breakthrough after 20 minutes when Adam back-heeled a fantastic pass to James Mitchell on the left bye line and his perfect cross was headed powerfully into the net by Jack. A few minutes later and Culter had their first shot on goal but it went narrowly past the right-hand post.
Culter’s pressure finally paid off after 25 minutes when their enormous No. 10 headed a corner off the bar and onto a team mate waiting gratefully to knock-in the rebound. Kemnay tried to reply from a free-kick that Connor Ross knocked in to Connor Hunter but his looping header was saved by the Culter keeper.
The referee had a “colourful” game, having words with a couple of the Kemnay faithful as things became a bit heated and seeming to make decisions that were influenced by whichever shout came from the crowd. With half-time approaching, he gave a foul against Iain with Kemnay pressing the Culter goal when it should clearly have gone the other way. With the Kemnay boys feeling aggrieved, Culter promptly ran up the park, won a corner and scored their second with the ball seemingly deflecting off the No. 10’s planted foot. Injustice or what?

Half Time:  Culter BC Colts      2      Kemnay FC 97     1

The half-time team talk motivated Kemny and they were the stronger team without creating any clear-cut chances. This changed after 10 minutes when Adam went on a powerful run, beating about 10 players (ok, it was 4) before passing the ball through a gap for Alex to run onto and slide into the net off the left-hand post – what a goal!
Adam had another good run 5 minutes later in which he somehow managed to keep his feet despite some heavy tackles but the ball was eventually lost. With the game now end-to-end, it was Culter who edged ahead after Kemnay failed to clear a long ball and the result was a low shot into the net.
With 5 minutes to go, the game could still have gone either way but unfortunately it was Culter who scored with a goal from “nothing”. A goal kick was immediately returned over the Kemnay defence and one of the Culter strikers was able to score with a shot over the keeper’s head.
With the game drawing to a close, Culter added to their total after a good run by their No.15 saw him pass the ball to their No. 10 and he was able to chip the ball over James Duncan and into the Kemnay goal.
A strange game in which both keepers were rarely troubled apart from having to pick the ball out of the net and Kemnay scoring two fantastic goals but still losing. The boys played extremely well and the score line definitely doesn’t reflect the balance of play but as they say, “that’s football”. We could always argue that Kemnay won 6-5 on aggregate!
