AFC STANLEY (Manchester) 7 KEMNAY FC 97 1
The second friendly game of KFC 97’s world tour promised to be more difficult than the first with the opposition having qualified for a local cup final and their warm-up showing that they had plenty of venom in their shots. Add to this the fact that the Kemnay boys had been training with Manchester City, had played a friendly the day before and many had been up until midnight watching “Match of the Day” to the background of the adults having a sing-song in the hotel bar - the odds didn’t look too good!
Alex impressed all around by piping the team onto the park before pennants were handed-over. With the KFC boys looking as though they were still asleep, things started badly with possession immediately being lost from the kick-off. James Duncan pulled-off a great save after 3 minutes before Iain raced down the line and had a shot on goal but unfortunately he lifted it over the top. A good ball over the top of the home defence by Connor Hunter was picked-up by Alex but his shot also went just over.
The game was relatively even for 20 minutes with Kemnay shooting against a strong wind but the floodgates opened for the home team with a burst of 4 goals in 10 minutes. The first came after some slack defending was pounced on by Liam, the AFC Stanley No. 10. The second goal was unfortunate for James in the Kemnay goal with the opposition’s No. 8, Josh, unleashing a hopeful ball from just over the halfway line that was carried by the wind and bounced wickedly on the 6-yard line before finding its way high into the net.
James Duncan made up for the second goal by pulling-off an amazing point-blank save but it wasn’t long before the AFC Stanley No. 10 powered-through the Kemnay defence and gave the keeper no chance. It was no great surprise when Liam (No. 10) scored AFC Stanley’s 4th just before half-time.
Half Time: AFC Stanley 4 Kemnay FC 97 0
With the wind advantage, the Kemnay substitutes injected a bit more energy into the game but it was AFC Stanley who added to their tally first with a corner being volleyed straight into the net by their No. 7. James Duncan pulled-off save after save, two of these at the feet of the opposition as it seemed they were going to run-up a cricket score.
With 15 minutes gone, Adam had a chance but he panicked slightly and “AB-Scooped (trademark)” it over the top. Another wonder save saw James Duncan turn a goal-bound shot around the post before a good run by Iain saw the ball flash agonizingly in front on the opposition goal with Dean just unable to get his foot on it. With amazing saves too numerous to mention, James Duncan was finally beaten after 30 minutes after his defence failed to clear the ball after about 5 attempts and AFC Stanley finally accepted the gift.
Kemnay were rewarded with a consolation goal with Iain coming close before Alex hit a long looping shot into the top left hand corner. His celebration was something else as he ran to the halfway line before going down on his knees and gesturing to the opposition fans (we think it was the number “1” he was gesticulating or at least we hope it was).
The loss of a goal (or was it the celebration) seemed to upset the opposition and they scored their 7th within a few seconds of the kick-off.
After the game, the Kemnay entourage was invited back to a local pub (Ricky Hattan’s local) for a snack and some light refreshments. This was greatly appreciated and even more so when the landlord made a donation to the KFC 97 team to go towards equipment and handed-over a signed and framed Ricky Hattan poster – a very kind gesture indeed!
All the best to Paul, Karen and the boys of AFC Stanley, for their cup final this Sunday the 9th.
