The gale force winds that battered Kemnay on Saturday had thankfully subsided and it was a beautiful day for football in Bogbeth Park. Kemnay FC Juve welcomed Fraserburgh for this Development League fixture. The home side was forced into a slight re-shuffle as Archie was away for the weekend. So it was Matthew Robertson who took his place in goals. Reuben and Cameron played at the back, the midfield consisted of Lewis, Liam and Mason and Ethan started the game as striker. This meant Matthew Law and Sebastian started on the bench.
The game kicked off and it was the visiting team that looked sharper in a bright opening 20 minutes. With good football being played by both teams, the difference in the opening 20 was in front of goal. Whlst Kemnay struggled to create any clear-cut chances, Fraserburgh took the few chances that came their way. Good finishing and an element of slackness in defence saw the visitors race into a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.
Having said that the highlight of the first period was a stunning double save by Matthew in goals. After good Fraserburgh play, he dived full length to his right to push away an excellent strike and just as it looked like the Fraserburgh player was going to slot the rebound into the empty net, he somehow got back to his feet and threw himself in front of the follow up shot, turning it round the post for a corner - brilliant stuff!
Kemnay made a couple of changes at the start of the second period with Matthew Law and Sebastian replacing Mason and Ethan. The second period saw Kemnay competing really well against a good Fraserburgh side. In a very evenly matched game overall the second period largely belonged to Kemnay. They showed great tenacity in the tackle and used the ball much better than the first period. Time and again they got themselves into great positions but on each occasion they found the Fraserburgh goalkeeper to be in inspired form. Sebastian had four or five excellent shots but just could not get the better of the visiting stopper. Eventually though Kemnay's good play was rewarded and and after a good cross by Sebastian, Lewis was on hand to steer the ball into the net with his right knee. Throughout the second period, Kemnay defended really well and when called upon, Matthew was really brave in goal.
Like the second period, the final 20 minutes was a really competitive affair with both teams looking to play good football. Again Kemnay probably edged in terms of possession and pressure, however Fraserburgh always looked dangerous on the counter attack. Indeed had it not been for Matthew in goals and Mason and Cameron at the back they may have scored more than the one that they did.
The final goal of the game was the goal of the match. Mason picked up the ball at right back. He played it inside to Sebastian who switched the ball first time out to Matthew Law in a wide position, he played it back inside to Sebastian who took the ball in his stride and when he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper, he showed excellent composure and unselfishness to slip the ball to the left for Ethan to finish into the empty net.
All in all this was an excellent game between two very evenly matched teams intent on playing football and had it not been for a fantastic goalkeeping display by the Fraserburgh keeper, the result could have been quite different.
